Located in the peaceful village of Pinnawala, in Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa Province, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a sanctuary for young elephants that have been displaced or orphaned in the wild. Depart from Udawalawe by 10:00–10:30 AM toward the southern coast.

Take the route via Embilipitiya → Tangalle → Matera → Mirissa.

Suggested Stops On Route:

1. Mulkirigala Rock Temple (near Tangalle – ~1.5 hrs. from Udawalawe) A serene and lesser-known ancient rock temple complex. Climb a series of stone steps for beautiful views and visit centuries-old cave temples with murals and reclining Buddha statues.

2. Hiriketiya Beach (optional detour) A small but stunning surf and yoga cove, perfect for a swim or fresh coconut. Great place to stop for a light lunch or smoothie.

3. Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project, Near Tangalle, this project offers the chance to witness sea turtle nesting.  

Afternoon: Arrive in Mirissa

Check-in to your beach hotel. Relax by the beach with a fresh king coconut or cocktail in hand.

Evening: Chill at Mirissa Beach, Enjoy a sunset walk along the golden sands.
